Website Latest News

Welcome to our "new and improved" website. It is currently being rationalised and upgraded so please bear with us in the mean time.

The site has been altered to make the best use of CSS functionality, removing all those old style tables that never really worked across the different browsers people use. This site has been extensively tested against Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox 2.0; hopefully all those bugs have now been ironed out .... testing is now being carried out against Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 3.0.

It has become evident that there are still major differences in how the browsers apply the various tags and use Javascript. As some of our cadets are starting to design websites at school, I have decided to include some problems I've encountered with this site and the workarounds I have had to use (see below). Also included are some useful web links to other sites I have found useful.

Positioning and Layout Problems

1. Due to differences in fonts and how they are displayed, and positional HTML elements and how they are applied, 2 different cascading style sheets (.CSS files) have been used (967ff.css for mozilla firefox, 967ie.css for MS Internet Explorer). These files still need rationalising to remove bits no longer required. If you view the page source then you will find a short 'browser' test at the top of every page; the result will then depend on which CSS file is used.

2. Problems were encountered when trying to use absolute & relative positioning of elements. I have redesigned 967 Sqn Info/Duke of Edinburgh (dofe.htm) to use the float parameter with the img tag. Unfortunately, the captions for each photo wouldn't work properly with absolute or relative positioning so javascript was used to check for IE or Firefox browsers and then position each caption as required. See the source code at the bottom of the dofe.htm file. Other files will be updated shortly.

Useful Web Links

Visit Dynamic Drive for free, original Dynamic HTML scripts and components, all of which ultilize the latest in Dynamic HTML and JavaScript technology. Deconstruct, study and amend or simply cut & paste into your web files for that profession look. And it's all free. Dynamic Drive now have a section on CSS design.

Mozilla Firefox Version 3 is now available as a free download. Also available are various free extensions and plug-ins for this browser. Firebug (for Firefox 2 only - update pending) and Web Developer are very useful extensions to the browser.

The Webmaster

More to follow soon - if you have any recommendations or suggestions then I will be available on the Sqn most parade evenings (excluding the skiing season of course).

Hope you have found the above useful...
